In celebration of the 2014 National Black History Month, the Florida Department of Health in Orange County (DOH-Orange) will host its annual Black History Public Health Awareness events which, this year, will focus on health equity and healthiest weight which are among the top priorities for DOH-Orange.
“The work of Doctor King is yet unfinished. It is up to us, those of us here today, to build a culture of health equity… If not us, who? If not now, When?,” said Dr. Kevin M. Sherin, director of the Florida Department of Health in Orange County.
Tracing Our Steps to a Healthier Life and Soul is the theme for the Florida Department of Health in Orange County event taking place on Friday, February 21st from 11:30am to 2:00pm at 6101 Lake Ellenor Drive in Orlando. Fabiola Gaines, RD, LD, Director of Nutrition Services for Hebni Nutrition Consultants, Inc. will present a cooking demonstration to educate the community on healthy eating for the body, mind and soul. The first 50 people to arrive at the event will receive a food sample.
This free event has the goal to promote healthy eating and wellness in a cultural context. The event also includes dynamic nationally known speakers and entertainment. Light refreshments will be served.
The month long celebration of Black History Month began in 1976. The purpose of Black History Month is two fold – to educate non-black Americans about African American History and its culture and to instill among African Americans pride in their heritage.
