Health Department: “Pill Mill” Doctor Suspended from Practicing Medicine

A Lee County doctor has been suspended, after the Florida Department of Health (DOH) filed an Emergency Suspension Order (ESO) against Dr. Jacinta Gillis, immediately suspending her license to practice medicine in Florida for committing medical malpractice.

The ESO is the result of an investigation conducted by DOH investigators after receiving complaints alleging Dr. Gillis was operating “pill mills” out of two of her medical practices, Dollar Medical Clinics, located in Pinellas Park and Lehigh Acres. It was discovered that between June 2008 and December 2009, Gillis allegedly treated patients without an appropriate medical examination and inappropriately prescribed controlled substances in excessive or inappropriate quantities.

During the same time DOH was conducting its investigation, Dr. Gillis was arrested on April 28, 2011 by a multi-agency task force who received a tip that Gillis was allegedly running a pill mill for personal monetary gain.  She was charged with four felony counts: 1. Racketeering, 2. Conspiracy to Commit Racketeering, 3.Conspiracy to Traffic in Oxycodone, and 4.Money Laundering. Gillis was booked into the Pinellas County Jail on a $1 million bond.

Gillis has the right to file a petition for review of the ESO within 30 days.
