On account of his enormous popularity among fellow Democrats, Representative-Elect Alan Grayson (D-Orlando) has snagged the post of Regional Whip. He won the post unanimously by acclamation.
As Regional Whip for Region VIII, Grayson will be responsible for consolidating support among the fifteen Democratic members from Florida and Georgia, for Democratic initiatives.
In accepting the post, Grayson said in a statement, “I am overwhelmed by the response that I have received from my colleagues. They are excited about my return because they know that I will be a strong voice and a reliable vote for Democratic principles, especially the protection of Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid.”
Among Grayson’s other responsibilities as Regional Whip will be relaying information and concerns about legislation from Members within Region VIII to the Democratic Leadership Team. Also, Grayson may often be asked by House leadership to participate in floor debates about pending legislation.
The Regional Whip post is considered to be a first step to a higher leadership position. Grayson, a Democrat from Orlando, will represent Florida’s 9th Congressional District, which includes southern Orange County, Osceola County and eastern Polk County.
