Governor Charlie Crist committed today, the state’s resources to assist the devastated island nation of Haiti in the aftermath of massive destruction, arising from an earthquake which struck the capital city, Port-au-Prince, yesterday.
Noting that close to 400,000 Haitians-Americans live in South Florida, Crist said that the state has at the ready, supplies in the form of 65,000 ready-to-eat meals, water, cots, and blankets to be sent into the county. Crist said too, that the state has some of the best police, canine teams and first responders and that two rescue units were being federalized, allowing them to be deployed to Haiti later today.
Crist said that the best way for the public to support Haiti would be through donations and in this connection a website had been established to receive contributions.
“Florida is here to help our neighbor nation”, Crist said. “We will continue to marshal resources, reach out and continue to comfort people”.
Commenting on the likely significant death toll, Crist said that the figures were “astounding”.
