Gelber Calls Florida House GOP “Callous”

Sen. Dan Gelber--candidate for Florida Attorney General

Although the Florida Senate passed legislation that would allow renters more time to find a new place if their landlord was being foreclosed upon, Senator Dan Gelber believes that the House did not take up the bill because more members are “callous” toward renters, than not.   Gelber, who is in the race for Florida Attorney General, was responding to a question in an exclusive interview on Tuesday with West Orlando News Online, on mortgage foreclosure legislature.

Gelber said that, right now in Florida if a landlord is foreclosed upon, a tenant could end up being evicted without notice and on the street without any rights. He had introduced legislation that would allow tenants to remain until the lease term was up or 90 days which ever is greater.  Although the bill was passed out of the Senate, the Florida House did not take it up.

“Frankly, there are more callous people there (Florida House) than not callous people,” Gelber said. “I think that they just did they not want to bother with tenants, although they should be wary of tenants because millions of Floridians are renters.  I really hope that they take note of the cold shoulder that the Florida House gave them.”
