SUN SAFETY

Enjoy the summer sunshine, but also be sure to protect your skin from its damaging rays.

Here are some tips to help you stay safe:

  • Apply sunscreen to exposed skin.  Apply sunscreen 15 to 30 minutes before going outdoors, and re-apply every 2 hours.
  • Choose your sunscreen wisely.  Select one with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) number of 30 or above.  Use a “broad-spectrum” and water resistant product.  A broad spectrum sunscreen gives you protection from both the ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB rays of the sun.
  • Wear sunglasses.  Sunglasses should block 99-100% of the sun’s UVA and UVB rays.

Want to check your suntelligence?  Take an online survey at the American Academy of Dermatology’s website: www.aad.org.  Click the public tab and sun safety section.

  • One serving of fruit is about the size of a tennis ball.
  • One serving of protein is about the size of a deck of cards or bar of soap.
