Academics and industry experts participating in a symposium on Monday concluded that offshore drilling poses little risk to Florida’s environment.
The symposium was sponsored by Florida State University (FSU) to discuss the very topical and contentious issue of oil drilling off Florida’s coast.
Offshore drilling which has been hotly debated in Florida’s legislature, pitts supporters of offshore drilling against environmentalists who fear that Florida’s coastline could be affected from leaking rigs.
But experts who participated in the symposium said that tanker collisions and coastal storage facilities susceptible to hurricanes are more threatening than drilling rigs and pipelines.
