The movie, From the Rough, produced by Michael J. Critelli and Pierre Bagley, is based on the true story of Catana Starks, the only woman ever to coach a college men’s golf team.
Starks, a dedicated coach at Tennessee State University, transitioned from a swim coach to a golf coach, as the University was ending its swimming program.
Oscar nominee Taraji P. Henson portrays Starks in the film. Tom Felton of Harry Potter plays one of several international students in the movie.
Still largely an exclusive and exclusionary sport for minorities, Starks has a hard time finding black golfers at colleges and thus resorts to exploring for potential talent, internationally.
Against all odds, Coach Starks brings together youths from various backgrounds and ethnicities, with little in common, and is able to transform these underpriviledged kids to win The PGA National Collegiate Minority Championship.
Shot in New Orleans and geared toward the contemporary urban market, From the Rough will inspire everyone, particularly those less fortunate, to reach for the stars. The movie opens in theaters this fall.
