Former State Representative Travaris McCurdy entered the Florida House District 40 race.
Former Democratic State Rep. Travaris McCurdy announced his candidacy recently on social media, asking voters to send him back to the Florida legislature.
“I’ve taken time to reflect deeply on what truly matters—my family, my faith, my values, and this community,” Travaris McCurdy said. “I’ve done the work to grow into the man you can count on and be proud of. I’ve spent time serving, listening, and learning—because leadership starts with understanding the people you represent.”
The Central Florida candidate served as a former State Representative from 2020–2022, saying he had a proven record of delivering results. He said top accomplishments during his previous time as a legislator included securing $950,000 for the Florida Children’s Initiative to reduce youth recidivism, co-sponsoring legislation protecting firefighters’ rights during informal inquiries and investigations, and co-sponsoring a bill establishing the Division of Early Learning to strengthen early education programs and expand childcare options.
“Today, I’m more prepared and more determined than ever to return to the Florida House and finish the work we started together,” the Orlando Democrat said. “I’m ready to fight for lower insurance costs, meaningful juvenile justice reform, support for workers and small businesses, and stronger public schools. But I also know that listening never stops—so I want to keep hearing from you, learning from you, and fighting for what matters most to us. This is our movement. Let’s move forward together. Vote to send me back to the House on June 24.”
McCurdy said he is a career public servant, as a former Chief Legislative Aide and Deputy Political Director for a national progressive organization, founder of the Mobile Library, board member for OCPS ACE School Board, and active NAACP member. He is a proud product of Orange County Public Schools and a graduate of Olympia High School’s first class.
His campaign is dedicated to strengthening small businesses, expanding affordable housing, and investing in children’s future.
Rashon Young is another Democrat running in this special election. One Republican, Tuan Le, qualified in the election. Christopher Hall qualified as a write-in candidate.
The special primary election will be June 24, 2025. The special election will be September 2, 2025.
