An unarmed man who was shot and killed by police in North Carolina, as he ran toward officers for help, was a former Florida A&M University football player.

Jonathan Ferrell, 24, was shot multiple times when cops say he surprised three Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officers by running toward them around 2:00 a.m. Saturday, nydailynews.com reports.

Police say, Ferrell matched the description given by a woman who called 911 moments earlier to report a man had knocked wildly on her front door, trying to get in.  It is believed that Ferrell was seeking help following a car crash, the paper also reported.

When officers arrived on the scene, Officer Randall Kerrick, 27, quickly reacted by firing his weapon, killing the former FAMU footballer.  Kerrick was later charged with manslaughter on account of “excessive” force.
