Forbes: Tallahassee Among Top 10 Most Dangerous American Cities

Tallahassee - Old State Capitol

Forbes has named Tallahassee, Florida’s capital city, among the top ten most crime-prone areas in the country in 2011. Tallahassee ranked #8 with 775 violent crimes per 100,000 residents.

The high crime in the Tallahassee metro area is explained by its location on Interstate 10, which makes it an attractive city for drug runners, bringing contraband north from Miami and the surrounding area, according to the magazine. The authors of the report also suggest that povery and segregation are also playing a major role in making the area a high crime one.

The most dangerous American city is Detroit, Michigan with 1,111 violent crimes per 100,000 residents. This is followed by Memphis, TN; Springfield, IL; Flint, MI and Anchorage, AK.

The list of America’s most dangerous cities was compiled using FBI’s uniform crime report for 2010, which tallies crime data for each of the country’s metro statistical areas, regions that usually consists of a large city and its suburbs or nearby cities.   Metropolitan Statistical Areas with a population of 200,000 or more were used to determine most dangerous cities, along with four categories of violent crimes: murder and non-negligent manslaughter; forcible rape; robbery; and aggravated assault.
