Floridians to Vote on 1-cent Sales Tax?

By Lloyd Dunkelberger

Senate leaders may ask voters to approve a 1-cent increase in the state sales tax to pay for schools.

If endorsed by the House, lawmakers want to put the issue on a special-election ballot in the fall. It would be coupled with a plan to scale back the existing class-size amendment.

The tax, if approved by two-thirds of the voters, would raise $2.8 billion per year at a time when lawmakers are struggling to write a budget facing an unprecedented plunge in state revenue. It would increase the existing state sales from 6 cents on each $1 purchase to 7 cents.
