Republican Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) gets a negative rating from Florida voters for his work on immigration reform, but still is viewed favorably, according to a just-released Quinnipiac University poll.
While poll results show voters disapprove by 41 – 33 percent of the way Rubio is handling the immigration, he gets a 51 – 36 percent job approval rating.
Rubio’s approval rating is little changed from his 48 – 33 percent approval in March 20, when a similar survey was undertaken by Quinnipiac University.
“As perhaps the best-known Hispanic-American in national politics Sen. Marco Rubio has a tightrope to walk between keeping the folks back home happy and serving as a high-profile symbol for the GOP nationally,” said Peter A. Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.
Fifty-eight percent of Florida voters say, illegal immigrants should be allowed to stay in the U.S., with a path to citizenship, the survey found.
On expanded background checks, voters say, 49 – 10 percent they think less favorably of Rubio because of his vote against the measure. Background checks are “strongly” supported by 73 percent of voters, including 63 percent of voters in houses with guns.
The Quinnipiac University poll, conducted during the period June 11-16, surveyed 1,176 registered voters and has a margin of error of +/-2.9 percentage points.
