Florida Universities get Millions for BP Gulf Spill Research


The University of South Florida’s College of Marine Science, Florida State University, the University of West Florida and the University of Miami were awarded millions of dollars to help study the impacts of the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill.

The schools are getting the money from the BP-funded Gulf Research Initiative, which is providing $112.5 million over three years to address the spill – part of a $500 million commitment over 10 years.

Florida State University will be the lead institution on one project, which is getting $20 million over three years.

The University of South Florida will be the lead institution on another project, which is getting $11 million from the fund.
