Florida U.S. House Democrats Oppose Deporting Illegal Immigrants with DUIs

150 U.S. House Democrats voted against legislation to deport illegal immigrants charged with DUI, including Central Florida Democratic Congressman Darren Soto and Orlando Democrat Maxwell Frost. A total of 59 Democrats vote with Republicans passing bill to deport illegal immigrants who committed DUIs.

Republican Rep. Barry Moore’s bill, H.R. 6976, recently passed the Judiciary Committee 13-10 on a party line vote. This legislation would deport illegal immigrants who have been convicted or committed the offense of driving while drunk or impaired.

immigrants DUITampa Rep. Kathy Castor and South Florida Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz joined Soto, Frost and every Florida Democrat except one to vote against the proposed legislation. Only South Florida Congressman Jared Moskowitz voted for the bill.

Former President Donald Trump said the Democrats “are in agreement with Joe Biden,” pointing to a 2020 interview, where President Biden said that ICE should “only arrest for the purpose of dealing with a felony that’s committed, and I don’t consider drunk driving as a felony.”

In addition to opposing legislation to deport illegal immigrants charged with DUI, the Center for Immigration Studies issued a report on how President Biden’s policies have helped criminal illegal aliens. “Under Biden, there’s a 71% decrease in ICE arrests of illegal aliens with DUI records,” said Jon Feere of CIS. “During Trump’s first three years there were 235,800 DUI records on the aliens ICE arrested; during Biden’s first three years, only 69,282 records.”

“Biden has carried out this view as president,” the Trump campaign said. “ICE arrests of criminal illegal aliens with DUIs have plummeted during his administration.”
