Florida to get $70M in Homeland Security Grants

Florida is set to receive over $70 million in Homeland Security Grants from the U.S Department of Homeland Security said.   The grants are designed to enhance the ability of states and urban areas to prevent, protect against, respond to and recover from terrorist attacks and other disasters.

For the current fiscal year, Florida has been awarded a total of $74.1 million in funding.  The final FY 2010 awards for Florida are:

  • Urban Areas Security Initiative (UASI):  $35,367,406 for developing integrated regional systems for prevention, protection, response and recovery.

The five designated Florida areas will receive:

  • Ft. Lauderdale UASI  $6,067,168
  • Miami UASI           $11,039,650
  • Jacksonville UASI    $5,355,350
  • Orlando UASI         $5,090,188
  • Tampa UASI           $7,815,050
  • State Homeland Security Program (SHSP): $33,011,575 to build capabilities at the state and local levels.
  • Metropolitan Medical Response System (MMRS):  $2,221,933 to establish and sustain local capabilities to respond to all-hazards mass casualty incidents, including terrorism, epidemic disease outbreaks, natural disasters, and large-scale hazardous materials incidents. $317,419 each to the cities of: Miami, Jacksonville, Tampa, St. Petersburg, Hialeah, Ft. Lauderdale and Orlando.

To establish and sustain local capabilities to respond to all-hazards mass casualty incidents, including terrorism, epidemic disease outbreaks, natural disasters, and large-scale hazardous materials incidents. $317,419 each to the cities of: Miami, Jacksonville, Tampa, St. Petersburg, Hialeah, Ft. Lauderdale and Orlando.

  • Nonprofit Security Grant Program (NSGP): $1,459,182 to support target-hardening activities to nonprofit organizations that are at high risk of international terrorist attack.  $364,000 went to the Ft. Lauderdale area; $53,172 went to the Jacksonville area, $749,144 to the Miami area; and $292,866 to the Tampa Area.
  • Citizen Corps Program (CCP): $538,587 for coordinating citizen and community involvement in emergency preparedness, planning, mitigation, response, and recovery.
  • State Homeland Security Program (SHSP) Tribal Funding :  $594,478 for the Seminole tribe of Florida help strengthen the Nation against risks associated with potential terrorist attacks and other hazards.
