Art in the Park
1st Saturday fun for everyone!
Come out and enjoy Stephen Foster Folk Culture Center State Park on the First Saturday of each month where you can spend the whole day having a great family experience. Enjoy Art in the Park at the parks craft square and gift shop. The event is held from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. Crafters will demonstrate the art of pottery, fabric arts, stained glass, quilting, painting, jewelry making and a wide variety of beautiful Florida art. Workshops will also be available for several of the crafts for a small fee. The workshops are first come, first served. See below for specific dates. Spend the rest of the afternoon enjoying our spacious and shaded picnic and playground area where the family can enjoy a relaxing picnic and let the kids play.

Living historians recreate life at Fort Clinch during the War Between the States. Activities may include artillery demonstrations, medical demonstrations and soldier drills. Candlelight viewings on Saturday evenings every First Weekend (except December). See below for specific 2009 dates.

Turn right on Atlantic Avenue and go about two miles, Fort Clinch State Park will be on the left.

Hand pull and remove young pepper trees from sections of the coastal hammock and help protect the ecosystem in your backyard! Learn about this exotic invader, help restore the Preserve and meet your neighbors.
This is an easy to moderate task and involves walking, bending, stretching and pulling. Work at your own pace.
After the pull all are welcome at the Ozello Civic Association for lunch and conversation.
Bring work gloves to protect your hands; long pants are recommended.

SUWANNEE DULCIMER RETREAT
A weekend of workshops, jamming, concerts, fun and fellowship
Stephen Foster Folk Culture Center State Park will host the Suwannee Dulcimer Retreat on November 13 and 14. This event invites participants to a weekend of fun and fellowship along with workshops, jam sessions and evening concerts.
The Suwannee Dulcimer Retreat offers in-depth instruction and techniques on the mountain dulcimer, hammered dulcimer and autoharp musical instruments. Traditional music is celebrated with workshops offered for beginning, intermediate and advanced students, taught by nationally recognized instructors.
This year’s mountain dulcimer instructors include performer and luthier Gary Gallier. Joining Gallier are mountain dulcimer instructors Ruth Harnden, Mary Z. Cox, Susan Boyer Haley, Aaron O’Rourke, Doug Felt and retreat director David Beede. The retreat also welcomes national performing artist Christie Burns and Florida’s own Sally Anderson for instruction on the hammered dulcimer. The autoharp instructors include performer Ivan Stiles and our own Carolee Stewart.
Concerts featuring these masterful instructors are scheduled for Friday and Saturday evenings in the park auditorium at 7:00 p.m. Tickets for public admission are $10.00. Admission to the two day event is $85.00, which includes all workshops, jam sessions, concerts and discussion groups.

If the road makes a 90 degree left turn, you’ve passed the park and need to turn around.

State Park interpretive program honors soldiers throughout history
Fort Clinch State Park is hosting a Veterans Day program saluting all who have served in the Armed Forces on November 14. The program includes a timeline of men and women portraying soldiers from each major military conflict in United States history. Visitors can bring a lawn chair or blanket and sit on the fort parade ground during the presentation. Admission to the park and program is free with a canned food donation for each person attending. Donations will be given the Barnabus Center’s food bank to help those in need during the holiday season.

Participants invited to a celebration of Old Time music
Stephen Foster Folk Culture Center State Park is now accepting registration for the Suwannee Old Time Music Weekend on December 4-6, 2009.
This three day event offers participants in-depth instruction in old time music techniques on the banjo, guitar, fiddle and voice for beginning, intermediate and advanced students. Join this year’s special guest instructors and nationally known performers, Mac Traynham, Shay Garriock, and, Jenny Traynham.
Concerts will be held on Friday and Saturday evenings in the park auditorium at 7:00 p.m. Tickets for public admission are $10.00. Friday evening is the Florida Masters Concert featuring Tom and Kay Van Treese, Gail Gillespie and Dwight Rogers. Saturday evening will feature an Instructor’s Showcase Concert with Florida favorites, Chuck Levy, Lloyd Baldwin, Greg Allen and Chuck Anton.
Admission to the three-day event is just $225.00, which includes all workshops, jam sessions, discussion groups, concerts and meals. A spouse program is being offered for just $85.00. Registration is now open and forms are available at Suwannee Old Time Music Weekend Registration. After November 20, there is a $15.00 late registration fee.

Olustee Battlefield Historic State Park
Date: Friday through Sunday, February 12 through February 14, 2010. Saturday’s battle begins at 3:30 p.m. and Sunday’s battle is at 1:30 p.m.
Description: The Battle of Olustee was fought on February 20, 1864. Full-scale artillery, mounted cavalry, and three African American regiments, including the 54th Massachusetts took part in the fighting that day. The Battle of Olustee was Florida’s largest Civil War battle, resulting in 2,807 casualties and a Confederate victory. More than 2,000 living history reenactors gather each year at Olustee Battlefield Historic State Park to present historically accurate portrayals of the war’s toll on both civilian and military life. Medical demonstrations are planned twice daily on Saturday and Sunday. Period music concerts, military camps and drills, and the lives of both soldiers and civilians during the war are portrayed by reenactors. The living history weekend features a Civil War-era battle reenactment on Saturday, as well as the reenactment of the Battle of Olustee on Sunday. Food concessions will be available. Pets are not allowed at Olustee Battlefield Historic State Park during the reenactment.
Educational programs are planned for Friday’s School Day when both public and private school students are invited to attend the reenactment. School groups may contact the park at 386-397-7009 to register for the event.

Description: This is an out-and-back race along the Park’s scenic, paved main road. The course is certified (FL09012EBM). Prize money for Open & Masters course records. Awards to first 3 finishers in each age group. The Park is located 6 miles north of High Springs, FL on U.S. Hwy. 441. IMPORTANT: You must arrive at the Park’s entrance by 7:30 a.m. Profits from the race will help the Park buy an audio/visual system for training/education and finish establishing its nature center.

Description: The first annual Trail of Payne 10k at Paynes Prarie Preserve State Park is a pure trail race you won’t want to miss! This run promises to be one of the most unique in the area, so take advantage of our beautiful state park during and after the race. After a brief park-road start, this challenging course is all trails. Expect every type of surface: packed dirt, roots, grass, soft sand and even a little mud. With trails that are winding & narrow, straight & wide, sunny & open or shady & dense, you won’t be bored on this track.

OLeno State Park

Description: The Friends of O’Leno will be hosting the third annual O’Leno Ole’ Chili Cook-Off on March 27, 2010, at O’Leno State Park. This year there will be two categories for the cook-off. A Chili Appreciation Society International, Inc. (CASI) sanctioned chili cook-off, open to all members of CASI and anyone wishing to enter under CASI rules. Contestants must be 18 years old or older. Rules can be found at Chili Appreciation Society International, Inc.. Trophy’s will be awarded to the 1st – 10th place winners in the cook-off and 1st – 3rd place winner of the showmanship competition. Turn in time for the chili in the CASI division is 1:00 p.m.
A second category has been added open to anyone wishing to enter a great pot of chili! All ages welcome. Trophy’s will be awarded for the 1st – 5th place winners in the open competition. Turn in time for the chili in the open division is 1:30 p.m.
Registration is from 8:30 a.m. – 9:30 a.m., with an entry fee of $20.00 per team for both the CASI and open divisions. A complementary breakfast will be provided for all contestants from 7:30 a.m. – 9:00 a.m.
Pre-registration is encouraged, and will begin on March 1, 2010. Forms are available by contacting the Friends of O’Leno at Friends of O’Leno or by calling Harriet Walsh at 386-454-4806.
Spectators may purchase sampling kits and vote for the “Peoples Choice Award”. One award will be presented to the overall winner of both the CASI and open division.
Campsites are available by making reservations at Reserve America or calling 800-326-3521.
