Florida NAACP Gives Nod to Medical Pot

Medical-MarijuanafinalAs voters head to the polls in less than 50 days, President of the Florida State Conference of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), Adora Obi Nweze announced Tuesday, the organization’s support for Amendment 2, the question of whether or not to legalize medical pot.

In making the announcement, Nweze said the African-American community is disproportionately impacted by debilitating diseases that medical marijuana would help treat.

“At a time when the African-American community is disproportionately impacted by debilitating diseases and conditions such as certain cancers, HIV/AIDS, glaucoma, diabetes, and sickle-cell anemia, it is vital to ensure that all health care options are on the table,” said Nweze in a statement. “The scientific community has consistently concluded that medicinal marijuana can improve the quality of life of certain sick and suffering individuals.”

Nweze said the NAACP is working to help pass Amendment 2 and hoped Floridians would join in supporting the measure.

“Supporting medical marijuana is simply the right thing to do,” said Nweze.

Polls show Floridians overwhelming support decriminalizing marijuana for patients with “debilitating medical conditions,” and Amendment 2 is expected to clear the 60% threshold necessary for passage.
