Florida Kids May Just be Returning to School Earlier

Four years after lawmakers voted to prevent school districts from eating into summer vacations, a bill by Sen. Bill Montford, D-Tallahassee, would allow officials to push forward the start of school in the fall so that school work could be completed before Christmas.

Schools are now prevented from commencing classes more that 14 days before Labor Day.

The proposal, SB 1468, would allow school administrators to begin classes early enough in August so that all work and assessments for full-term courses could be completed by Dec. 20.

Numerous attempts to give district officials more flexibility have been made since the law went into effect for the 2007-08 school year.
