Florida is 3rd Worst State for Underprivileged Children

 

childPovertyfinalFlorida has the unenviable distinction of ranking as the 3rd worst state in the nation for underprivileged children, according to a just-released report by WalletHub, a one stop destination for information for small business owners and consumers and the Web’s best personal finance resource.

Placing behind Mississippi and the District of Columbia which nabbed the first and second spots respectively, the sunshine state ranked 49th overall of the 50 states and the District of Columbia.

To study the living and economic conditions of youth in each state, the report looked at 16 key metrics ranging from infant death rates and children in foster care to child food insecurity rates and percentage of maltreated children.

Florida received the following rankings, according to the 2014’s Best & Worst States for Underprivileged Children:

Children’s Living & Economic Conditions in Florida (1=best) 

  • 36th – % of Children in Households with Below-Poverty Income
  • 40th – % of Maltreated Children
  • 45th – Child Food Insecurity Rate
  • 46th – % of Children without Health Insurance
  • 29th – Infant Death Rate
  • 41st – Homeless Persons in Families per Capita
  • 20th – % of Children in Foster Care
  • 46th – % of Children in Single-Parent Families
  • 44th – Children living in Renter-Occupied Housing Units to Children living in Owner-Occupied Housing Units Ratio
