Florida House Candidate Jason Henry Rails Against Voter Purge

Florida House candidate Jason Henry (D-District 46) released a statement on Monday criticizing Florida Secretary of State Ken Detzner – a Republican – for unfairly targeting minorities in the state’s bid to purge voters from the list of those eligible to participate in the upcoming elections.

Jason Henry on the voter purge …

“Republican Secretary of State Ken Detzner and his Republican counterparts are unfairly targeting minority voters in an effort to remove noncitizens from the state’s voting rolls. Voter fraud is not a problem, as the data shows.

“In the state’s search for these potential noncitizens, black and Hispanic voters – who are U.S. citizens – are being forced to prove to the state that they are citizens. Besides being politically motivated, this is ethically improper and a waste of the state’s time and resources.

“While this may be viewed as a way to streamline our voting process, it is simply another way to target Democratic voters. Mr. Detzner is attempting to shroud this so-called initiative as a way to rid the system of illegal residents, but instead he is concentrating the state’s resources on the Democratic Party because so many Hispanics are registering as Democrats.

“The Florida GOP has already engaged in the practice of voter suppression by making it an arduous process for minorities and renters to vote, as well as for those wanting to register new voters. It is time for the Florida Republican Party to stand down on their attacks on the state’s voters and stop the practice of bringing back antiquated voting laws.”
