Florida Hospital for Children to Launch Pediatric Residency Program

Florida Hospital is continuing to establish Orlando as a leading medical destination by receiving accreditation for a Pediatric Residency Program. The first residents will begin their training at Florida Hospital for Children in July 2014.

“This program is a reflection of Florida Hospital for Children’s investment in medical education,” said Dr. Stacy McConkey, pediatric residency program director at Florida Hospital for Children. “The hospital is educating the doctors of tomorrow while helping fill an area of medicine where we are seeing a shortage of physicians. The goal is to train the residents to become caring and compassionate pediatricians who are well trained in the art of patient-centered care.”

The Pediatric Residency program is a three year program that will have six residents per year, with a total of 18 residents when completely full. The residents will do all of their inpatient rotations at Florida Hospital for Children, and have a variety of outpatient pediatric subspecialty rotations including dermatology, urology and neurology. The residents’ primary outpatient experience will be at the new Florida Hospital Center for Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine clinic in Winter Garden, where residents will be guided by a team of expert faculty through the course of the program.

Florida Hospital has been offering medical residencies for over 35 years. In addition to this new residency program, Florida Hospital currently operates residencies in Allopathic Family Medicine, Osteopathic Family Medicine including Neuro-musculoskeletal Medicine, Internal Medicine, Podiatry, Radiology, Emergency Medicine and General Surgery, as well as fellowships in Geriatrics, Women’s Health, Minimally Invasive Surgery, Colorectal Surgery and Gynecologic Oncology.

Opened in 1908, Florida Hospital is a faith-based institution focused on providing whole person care. It is one of the largest non-for-profit hospitals in the country, caring for more than a million patient visits per year-more than any other hospital in the country, according to the American Hospital Association.
