Florida Freezing Temperatures Could Hurt Citrus Crops

For a fourth day, much of Florida continues to experience temperatures 15 to 20 degrees below normal highs and lows and freeze warnings remain in effect.

Although Florida farmers are bracing for the freezing temperatures, there are increasing concerns regarding oranges, strawberries and tropical fish and many are hoping that the mercury will not drop below 28 degrees for any extended period.

However, the cold temperatures are likely to persist through the week-end and into the middle of next week, as north west winds persist.

A weather advisory issued earlier today forecasts temperatures to bottom out in the mid-to upper 20s Monday night through early Tuesday morning.  The combination of very cold temperatures and sustained northwest winds near 10 mph will again drop wind chill values into the upper teens to lower 20s for an extended period, the wind chill advisory stated.

Floridians are being warned to take all precautions if they venture outside and to wear appropriate clothing, including a hat and gloves.
