Florida drivers will have to meet tougher requirements when renewing their licenses or updating information. These new requirements are part of the Real ID Act of 2005 and a nation-wide effort to help reduce fraud and combat terrorism. They take effect come January 1, 2010.
Starting January 1, 2010, all applicants for a new license and in-person renewals will require two proofs of residence, proof of your Social Security number, as well as a primary form of identification. An existing license or identification will not be sufficient.
Implementation of these new ID requirements also coincides with increases in rates for licenses for Florida residents.
Last September, Florida legislature passed hefty increases aimed at helping to plug state budget deficits. Beginning January 1, 2010, the cost of a new license would now be $48 instead of $27, while license renewals would be $48, rather than $20. Replacement licenses would now be $25 as opposed to $10.
