Predictably, and on a consistent basis, the Florida Democratic Party tends to go out of its way to make dumb, needless foot-in-mouth decisions, exposing regularly why their return to power in Tallahassee is out of the realm of possibilities.
Their latest display of incompetence comes in the way it has handled the Gubernatorial candidacy of Nan Rich. Instead of taking the big-tent approach, it has chosen the road to humiliation, giving the Florida GOP yet another opportunity to show them as a party of bumbling idiots who deserve their minority status, and reasons why they should remain so.
It has been reported that Rich won’t be speaking at the upcoming Jefferson-Jackson dinner on June 15th, a premier fund-raiser for the Democrats.
While many are perplexed that Rich, the only announced Democratic candidate so far in the race for governor, has been denied a request to speak, she is receiving no shortage of coverage from the Florida GOP. Yesterday, the RPOF under the headline “That’s Rich!” noted Democratic activists are demanding that Senator Rich be given a speaking role at the dinner and there is much upset with the Florida Democratic Party over the slight.
The RPOF also noted that last Friday, AP reporter Brendan Farrington tweeted Rich was “very pleased that the Florida GOP is raising her profile.” Rich said too, that the FDP should recognize her as a candidate and let her speak at the dinner, Farrington also tweeted; “Certainly RPOF has recognized it.”
Meanwhile, the FDP has remained quiet over the brouhaha. According to reports, the state party has only said that, speakers are set for the dinner and that prior Jefferson-Jackson dinners have run too long.
Some have suggested, that while indeed previous Jefferson-Jackson dinners have been lengthy, it is the first time that an announced Gubernatorial candidate, and a former legislative leader with broad-based support, has been denied a speaking role at the dinner.
Is the Democratic Party unwisely waiting for a particular candidate to jump into the race? Whatever the case may be, Rich continues to build grass-roots support. Earlier this week she received an early endorsement from the National Organization for Women (NOW), a major statewide organization, in her bid for governor.
