Following a lawsuit alleging sexual misconduct against staffers by State Representative Fabián Basabe, the Florida Democratic Party called for his immediate resignation. If he will not resign, Florida Democrats are calling for the House to expel him.
Rep. Basabe, a Miami Republican, has called it a “false accusation” made by “lying scum.”
“The actions detailed in this lawsuit are both schocking and vile, said Florida Democratic Party Chair Nikki Fried. “If true, both Rep. Basabe and House Leadership owe restitution to these staffers and an apology to the people of Florida. As a society, we should have zero tolerance for sexual harassment directed towards any person of any gender.”
The allegations are part of a lawsuit filed in Leon County Circuit Court against Rep. Basabe and comes amidst a joint investigation into Basabe’s conduct by CBS News Miami and The Miami Herald.
“In light of these allegations, Fabián Basabe can no longer be entrusted with public service, and the Florida Democratic Party calls for his immediate resignation,” Chair Fried said. “If he chooses not to resign, we demand that the Florida House of Representatives follow their own ethics rules and expel him from their membership.”
Looks like the Dems don’t believe in the right to be innocent, until proven guilty.
