Florida Fugitive Arrested in Massachusetts for Aggravated Assault

A Florida man who had an altercation with a woman and her son and fired two shots into the air, while threatening to shoot the woman on October 10, was on Tuesday arrested in Massachusetts.

According to Orange Count Sheriff’s deputies, on October 10, just before 10:00 pm, a man became involved in a verbal altercation with 16-year-old boy and his mother outside a business at 7124 Aloma Avenue following a memorial service for a hit and run accident victim.  During the argument the man produced a semi-automatic handgun and fired two shots into the air and then threatened to shoot the woman. The incident was captured on video by a WFTV/CH 9 news crew that was in the area to cover the memorial service.

The video was turned over to investigators and broadcast several times on the news.  At least two CRIMELINE tips resulted from the video that enabled detectives to develop a suspect in the case.  A photo line up was produced based on those tips and shown to the victims of the assault who were able to positively identify the man who assaulted them.

Detectives obtained a warrant for the arrest of Jose Roman Martinez, 27, for aggravated assault with a firearm, unlawful discharge of a firearm, and carrying a concealed weapon.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Office Fugitive Unit worked with the United States Marshals Fugitive Task Force and located suspect Martinez in Springfield, Massachusetts.
Martinez was arrested on Tuesday by United States Marshals, the Springfield, Massachusetts Police Department and the Massachusetts State Police.

Sheriff’s deputies said that details of the arrest were unknown at this time.  It is also unclear whether Martinez will fight extradition to Florida.
