A University of Central Florida student who was struck last week by a pick-up truck near the campus died on Wednesday, Florida Highway Patrol confirmed.
Brooke Dawkins, 19, was severely injured after being hit while attempting to cross Alafaya Trail near Gemini Boulevard, on February 23.
Witnesses told troopers Dawkins has stopped in the crosswalk to talk to someone in a vehicle, then walked into the direct path of the pick-up that was heading northbound on Alafaya Trail.
Reginald Smith, 33, the driver of the pick-up attempted to stop, but was unable and Dawkins was hit, troopers said.
Dawkins was taken to Orlando Heath in critical condition and was declared medically brain-dead before passing away yesterday.
Smith is unlikely to face any charges, as he had a green light at the time of the crash which occurred around 2:30 a.m., troopers also said.
