The Orlando Redistricting Advisory Board held another public hearing in the City Council Chambers at City Hall to consider varied map proposals.
The nine member board considered six maps at last evenings meeting with two maps being presented by the public. At issue was moving neighborhoods of interest and making sure the African-American population is not diluted in Districts 5 and 6.
Due to the growth experienced in District 1 there will be some movement of communities or neighborhoods but that decision has yet to be made.
About 20 people were on hand for the hearing with the majority of those in attendance being frequent members of the Orange County Redistricting Committee’s public hearings. Orlando resident Doug Head was on hand to present a public proposal for the city as he has submitted map suggestions for the county as well.
The public is encouraged to attend these hearings to learn more about the process and to voice their opinions on how their districts should be drawn. While redistricting can be a complicated process it is important to learn as much about this procedure as possible. District lines are re-drawn every ten years and in order for there to be political fairness there needs to be fair lines drawn.
On Wednesday the Legislative Redistricting Board will be in town to discuss how state district lines will be drawn. The hearings will be held at the Bob Carr Performing Arts Center from 2pm to 4pm and from 6pm to 8pm.
Each hearing is open to the public and residents are encouraged to arrive early.
