FCRA Calls for Special Prosecutor to Investigate Trayvon Martin Killing

The Florida Civil Rights Association issued the following statement Wednesday, on the fatal shooting of Trayvon Martin:

Trayvon Martin

After receiving numerous phone calls, emails, and facebook requests from the public, the Florida Civil Rights Association (FCRA) is calling on Gov. Rick Scott to appoint a Special Prosecutor to investigate the shooting death of Trayvon Martin.

The FCRA believes that the State Attorney Office’s lack of reaction to the killing of Trayvon Martin reveals that the office is more concerned with the political benefits that may come from handling certain cases, rather than the pursuit of the truth and justice.

All persons have a constitutional right to be treated equally in our justice system said J. Willie David, III, president of FCRA. Race matters when the victim is white and the shooter is black when it comes to the type of law enforcement action a victim receives in Seminole and Brevard counties, stated David.

The FCRA believes that race and politics prompted Seminole/Brevard State Attorney to announce within 48 hours that he would seek the death penalty in the shooting death of a white Brevard County Sheriff’s deputy involving a black shooter and a white female. The death penalty was put on the table before law enforcement completed its investigation, stated David.

The State Attorney’s Office did not consider taking any action in the Martin’s shooting death.

Moreover, when the shooting death of Trayvon Martin was made public, no one from the State Attorney’s Office said anything about the investigation or the possible penalties involved, until the black community’s outrage was made clear.

Moreover, the fact that the State Attorney’s has appointed only one black as a judicial division chief since being elected, further reveals that his motives in the case maybe questionable. The office’s practices reveal that the concerns of the black community will go unaddressed with the State Attorney Office handling the Martin case.

The FCRA is concerned that the only reason the State Attorney’s Office called for the death penalty in the killing of Deputy Pill was because they believed the electorate would be inflamed, not only to see a deputy killed, but to learn that an interracial couple was involved in the killing.

The search for truth and justice should not be tainted with possible political prejudices or nefarious motives of any elected official, David added.
