Fatal Shooting in Central Florida Road Rage Incident

The investigation of a fatal shooting in Central Florida indicates that the shooter fired in self defense during a road rage incident.

Deputies responded to multiple 911 calls reporting the shooting around 9:11pm in the area of Fisher Drive and Leland Drive. It was reported that one man was deceased in the roadway.

The shooter remained on scene to report the incident and provide his account of it to responding deputies and detectives.

In an interview, he advised that prior to the shooting, he had passed a white Dodge Charger that slowed down in front of him on DeBary Avenue. After passing, he said the Charger began following him closely with its high beams on.

He said the Charger eventually backed off and he continued on his way. However, the Charger reappeared when he turned off Providence Boulevard onto Fisher Drive. He said it sped up, drove alongside him and then pulled in front of him to cut him off.

He told detectives the driver of the Charger got out of the vehicle and approached, yelling, with a firearm in his hand. When he saw the driver raising the firearm, he feared for his life and fired several rounds from his own weapon.

Detectives identified an independent witness in the area who was also able to give a full account of the incident, which matched the shooter’s.

The witness described seeing a white Dodge Charger swerving and cutting off another vehicle. He said he saw the driver of the Charger get out, approach the other vehicle with a gun in his hand, and point it at the other driver. The witness indicated he heard the other driver say something to the effect of “I don’t want any problems” multiple times before multiple gunshots were fired.

The witness said after the shooting, he saw the Charger driver lying on the ground, and the shooter approach to check on him and attempt to render aid.

The deceased was identified as 37-year-old Kenyon Ashley of Deltona. His next of kin was informed of his passing.

Several items of evidence were recovered from the scene, including both parties’ firearms, multiple shell casings and projectiles, and both vehicles.

Volusia County detectives contacted the State Attorney’s Office Homicide Investigation Unit to advise them of the initial findings of the investigation. It was determined that the evidence did not support any criminal charges at this time. The case remains active, and the State Attorney’s Office will review all the circumstances to make a final determination.
