About one dozen Florida A&M University College of Law students picked up golf clubs and perfected their swings on the green. It’s all part of the Fairways to Leadership Program that builds leadership skills through the game of golf.
“This is a new and great opportunity for our students,” said Jennifer Smith, professor at FAMU Law. “Our students are enjoying learning leadership skills from proven leaders and the game of golf from Coach Jamie Taylor, an LPGA professional. Fairways to Leadership is a premier program, and we are glad to be a part of it.”
FairWays to Leadership is a 501(c)(3) formed in the summer of 2020 by Dr. Eric Boyd and Anna Alvarez Boyd with the mission of creating greater social mobility and inclusion for college students from diverse communities. The organization accomplishes its mission by providing leadership development training centered around an innovative and immersive curriculum that combines online leadership training and on-the-course golf training. Students graduate from the program with enhanced leadership and golf skills they can use to network with business leaders and access leadership opportunities.
“We are excited to have students from FAMU College of Law participate in Fairways to Leadership,” said Co-Founder and President of FairWays to Leadership Dr. Eric Boyd. “The College is a natural fit for our mission to provide leadership development to students from diverse communities and we hope to serve students in the College well into the future.”
“The Fairways to Leadership Program teaches students the fundamentals of golf and leadership skills that are useful, not only on the golf course but also in everyday life,” said third-year FAMU Law student Edward Lavant from Jacksonville, Florida. “I am enjoying the program and networking with golf coaches and company executives from around the state. I am acquiring the skills necessary to play a round of golf.”
For third-year student Erykah Jackson from St. Augustine, Florida, playing golf is a rich and rewarding experience. “I cherish the opportunity to learn a sport that plays such an integral role in professional networking. The program is teaching us how to golf, engage leaders, create a network, and become leaders ourselves.”
The program wrapped up on Saturday, April 23rd, at the Twin Rivers Golf Club in Oviedo. Students participated in a 5-hole graduation.
