Executive Order Issued for Miami Special Election in House District 118

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis issued Executive Order 23-141 ordering an upcoming special election for Florida House District 118, which is part of Miami-Dade. The vacancy was caused by the resignation of State Representative Juan Alfonso Fernandez-Barquin.

By issuing an order for a special election in the district, Governor DeSantis has set the dates of October 3, 2023, for the primary election and December 5, 2023, for the general election.

Last month, Representative Juan Alfonso Fernandez-Barquin resigned from his position effective June 11, 2023, creating a vacancy in the State Legislature. Fernandez-Barquin, a Republican, was appointed by Governor DeSantis to serve as Miami-Dade County Clerk of Court and Comptroller on June 9th.

Three other Republicans had already filed paperwork to run in Florida House District 118, including Christian Chavez, Michael David Redondo, and Ernest “Ernie” Thomas.
