Evans High School teacher, Jennifer Bohn was selected as People Magazine Teacher of the Year. Bohn, along with four other teachers nationwide, was selected by People Magazine editors and an independent panel of advisors, for her innovation, inspiration and excellence.
Bohn teaches leadership development and is the coordinator of the International Baccalaureate program at Evans High.
She believes the key to helping students succeed is to show them that “someone cares about them.” So she reaches beyond the school walls. “When you go to their homes,” Bohn says, “you can tell what’s going on and what other influences they have in their lives.” In her 18 years of teaching, Bohn – who many students call “mom” – has amassed an impressive number of success stories. One of them, Latoya Mack, now 30, is a college graduate and is about to start a master’s degree in education. Mack said, “She insisted I would not fail.”
Bohn was a 2009 Macy’s Florida Department of Education Teacher of the Year finalist. She was one of five educators in the running statewide for the top honor. In 2001, she also represented her school as the teacher of the year candidate. For her current honor, she receives $4,000 for Evans High School and $1,000 for personal use. The issue featuring Bohn goes on sale Friday, Oct. 12, 2012.
