Evans High School Teen Honored for Leadership Work

An Evans High School teen is among the list of honorees being recognized as a member of Volunteer USA’s Teen Trendsetters™ Reading Mentors program this month.

Ranitra Walker

Ranitra Walker, of Evans High, is an outstanding volunteer in the award winning youth mentor program, which pairs high school students with second and third-graders for one-on-one weekly mentoring sessions.    The goal is to help high-risk mentees who are at least six-months behind their peers in reading skills and to nurture the volunteer spirit among youth leaders. The teens received training in reading, mentoring and leadership skills at the beginning of the year before helping the younger students with weekly mentoring sessions focused on reading skills and other educational activities.

Locally, Ranitra Walker is recognized for her excellent service and leadership in serving as a volunteer Teen Trendsetter™ this school year.

According to Program Advisor Jennifer Bohn, “Ranitra leads by example. She is committed and enthusiastic. She takes the Teen Trendsetters Program very seriously. Ranitra has worked diligently to recruit a solid team of mentors and spends each week working closely with her mentee.”

The award-winning Teen Trendsetters™ program began in Florida in 2002. Today there are 56 high schools serving 60 elementary schools across the state with approximately 3,500 students benefiting.
