Eustis Mayor, Scott Ales abruptly resigned his post Thursday night after walking out of a city commission meeting.
Less than 8 months after Ales was appointed to the post, he unexpectedly told his commissioners he was quitting without any explanation.
During the meeting, Ales had recused himself from a discussion involving First Green Bank on whose Board of Directors he sits. He then quit after that, walking out of the meeting.
Following the mayor or ex-mayor’s departure, chaos erupted among the bewildered commissioners.
Vice Mayor Karen LeHeup-Smith will serve temporarily, as mayor until commissioners are able to identify from among themselves a new mayor and vice mayor.
Ales is expected to offer an explanation of his actions later today.
