Eight OCPS Teachers Receive 2010 Excel Award

The Foundation for Excellence in Education selected eight Orange County Public Schools teachers for the 2010 Excel Award. The teachers were chosen based on proven success in the classroom. According to the foundation, 76 teachers statewide were selected based on a statistically-sound method developed along with the American Institutes for Research. Students in these educators’ classrooms have demonstrated the most progress in reading or math for the past three consecutive years as based on FCAT results. Data was provided to the foundation by the Florida Department of Education.

Greatest gains for all students and greatest gains for high achieving students

Sandra Hayes, Dommerich Elementary
Tara Ruyter, Avalon Elementary

Greatest gains with students who are below grade level

Jose Perez, Oakshire Elementary (repeat winner)
Gary Powell, Metrowest Elementary

Greatest gains with students learning English

Reinaldo Mariaca, Bay Meadows Elementary (repeat winner)

Greatest gains with students in families with low income

Martha Leyva, Walker Middle (repeat winner)

Greatest gains with students in charter schools

Terri England, Hope Charter
