Edwards Pushes for Referendum on Rental Car Surcharge

Commissioner Ted Edwards

Today, Orange County Commissioner Ted Edwards wrote to Mayor Teresa Jacobs requesting that the Board of County Commissioners discuss imposing a rental car surcharge of $2 per day.

Noting that legislation was passed in 2006 to impose a rental car surcharge, but vetoed by then Governor Jeb Bush, Edwards suggested that the issue be placed on the 2012 ballot, in order to gage voter interest.

If the Florida House and Senate ultimately pass legislation to impose the $2 rental car surcharge, Edwards proposed that the monies collected should be used to fund transportation projects and improvements.

Edwards noted that taxes and fess on rental cars in metro areas throughout Florida are low compared to what’s imposed in similar circumstances in other states.
