Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer officially filed paperwork to run for re-election in 2012, a statement said on Tuesday.
Dyer, who is the 32nd Mayor of the City of Orlando, has been serving its residents since 2003.
Commenting on his re-election bid, Dyer had this to say:
“For the last 8 years, I’ve had the privilege of working for and alongside the residents of our great City as we make Orlando the best city to live, work, learn and raise a family. Our community’s accomplishments have gained national recognition and we have united to move our city forward, overcoming many challenges. There is still more work to be done as our city and nation progresses from recession into recovery, and I am 100 percent dedicated to getting us there. I am committed to serving our neighborhoods, residents and businesses, and continuing our journey to make Orlando a world-class city — a place that is prosperous, healthy, safe and viable for our residents.”
Dyer, who in previous campaigns has put much political capital behind rebuilding Downtown Orlando, turning it into a 24-hour cultural and economic hub of Central Florida, has had several successes, including the Orlando Main Street Program, E-Zones in Downtown Orlando, Strength in Orlando Program and completion of a world class sports and entertainment facility–Amway Center– in October last year. Nonetheless, Dyer seeks re-election amidst high unemployment, tight budgets, a stalled performing arts center and an ongoing foreclosure crisis.
Dyer will kick off a formal re-election campaign this spring, the statement said.
