Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer, District 2 Commissioner Tony Ortiz and the City of Orlando will host the 5th annual City of Orlando Hispanic Heritage Month kickoff on Thursday, September 15, to celebrate the influence of Hispanic culture in Orlando.
This free event celebrates the commencement of Hispanic Heritage month which runs from September 15 to October 15, 2011. It honors the culture and traditions of U.S. residents who trace their roots to Spain, Mexico and the Spanish-speaking nations of the Central America, South America and the Caribbean. The starting date coincides with the anniversary of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua declaring their independence in 1821.
The kickoff will feature food from local Hispanic vendors as well as a showcase of Hispanic art and performances. Also, this year, there will be a special focus on Latinos and in particular Brazilians, who now contribute substantially to Orlando’s tourism receipts.
The City recognizes the important role played by the Hispanic community and Latinos in Orlando.
There is the Hispanic Office for Local Assistance (HOLA) located at 595 North Primrose Drive, that connects Hispanic residents with more than 140 government and community organizations to assist with jobs, housing, healthcare services, educational opportunities and many other resources.
