Dyer Proclaims April 2011 as Fair Housing Month

April marks Fair Housing Month and the 43rd anniversary of President Johnson signing the Fair Housing Act into law.

Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer who is committed to ensuring fair and equal treatment of all citizens, will kick off this year’s fair housing awareness campaign by proclaiming April 2011 as Fair Housing Month in the City of Orlando at the City Council on Monday, April 11, 2011 at 2:00 pm.

Each year the City of Orlando in a cooperative effort with the Federal Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) recognizes Fair Housing Month by hosting an array of activities that enhance the public’s awareness of their fair housing rights and highlight the national commitment to end housing discrimination. Fair housing laws protect our community making it illegal to discriminate in housing transactions based on race, color, national origin, religion, gender, disability, or familial status.

Below is a list of this year’s Fair Housing Month events:

Tuesday, April 12, 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

“Accommodations: Removing Barriers for People with Disabilities” presented by the Fair Housing Continuum, Inc  with presenters David Baade, Executive Director and CJ Miles, Deputy Director.  Topics covered will include:

* History of Disability Rights & Fair Housing
* Who is Protected and Recognizing Housing Discrimination?
* Prohibited Practices
* Reasonable Modifications/Accommodations
* New Construction Accessibility Requirements

Wednesday, April 20, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

“Foreclosure: Rising from the Ashes – Where do we go from here?” presented by the National Fair Housing Training Academy with presenter, Stella Adams, Executive Director.  Topics covered will include:

* Enhance knowledge and awareness of housing financial issues in the Orlando area
* 2010 Census data pertaining to the foreclosure in the Central Florida area
* Build awareness of best practices in handling the foreclosure process
