Driver Runs Over 1-year-old then Flees, Arrested

Troopers have arrested a driver who ran over a one-year-old child Tuesday afternoon and then drove away. It happened just after 4:00 p.m., on San Sebastian Circle in Orange County.

Troopers say, the driver of a 2000 Lexus, 50-year-old Manuel Menez, Jr., was backing out of the driveway at 4522 San Sebastian Circle, when the rear of his car ran over 1-year-old Isarel Williams, dragging the tot into the street.

Isarel was taken to the Arnold Palmer Children’s Hospital, where he is listed in critical condition.

Witnesses told troopers, Menez was warned that Isarel was behind the car as he was backing up.

Menez fled the scene after running over Isarel, but subsequently contacted Orange County Sheriff’s Office, claiming he had been battered by residents.

He was returned to the scene of the crime, where he was arrested by troopers. Menez had his 9-year-old daughter in the Lexus, when Isarel was run over, troopers said.

Menez has been charged with leaving the scene of a crash involving serious injuries, driving on a suspended license and improper backing.

Florida Highway Patrol is still attempting to locate Mendez’s vehicle.
