Driver Flees Scene of Crash that Killed Passenger

A driver fled the scene of a single-car crash that killed the front seat passenger early Sunday morning, according to Florida Highway Patrol.

The 2004 Chevy Avalanche was heading northbound on Ocoee Apopka Road away from Keene Road when it ran off the road and stuck a utility pole, just after 3:00 a.m.

Troopers said, the unnamed driver stopped and parked the vehicle in a parking lot on State Road 436, east of Sheeler Road, in Orange County.

Two other passengers in the vehicle, 25-year-old Fabiel L. Ayola and 22-year-old Primo R. Luna, both of Deland, told troopers that the driver abandoned the Chevy and fled the scene on foot.

Ayola and Luna called 911 for assistance for the injured passenger, a 22-year-old man who was in the front seat of the vehicle.  The unnamed passenger, also from DeLand, was taken to Florida Hospital Apopka, where he was pronounced dead.

It is not yet confirmed whether or not alcohol played a role in the crash. Troopers did say though, alcohol was a factor in relation to the deceased, Ayola and Luna.

The crash remains under investigation and charges are pending.
