The driver of car who blacked out behind the wheel of his vehicle, ended up running into the main building of the Spring Lake Elementary school, troopers said.
27-year-old James E. Gannon, of Altamonte Springs, lost control of his 2003 Toyota Camry after blacking out, as he traveled north on Northwestern Avenue, around 11:00 p.m. on Tuesday night.
Troopers said, Gannon’s black out caused him to fail to make a right turn and the vehicle struck a chain link fence which was adjacent to the playground of Spring Lake Elementary school. Gannon’s vehicle continued northbound and struck a column at the main building of the school, rotating counterclockwise in between two sections of the building.
Gannon suffered serious injuries as a result of the crash and was transported to the Orlando Regional Medical Center.
While the crash remains under investigation, troopers say, it is believed that Gannon suffered a head injury earlier in the day and this contributed to his passing out behind the wheel.
