Dr. Phillips High School sophomore Simon Dharmakirthi, got the surprise of his life when a local anonymnous donor gave $22,000 to pay for a custom-made motorized wheelchair he badly needs to be more comfortable and sit a little taller.
Although Simon was born with Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI), also known as “brittle bone disease,” that doesn’t prevent him from giving good luck fists bumps to football players as the run onto the field for games or making others laugh with his own practical jokes.
Now, he will be riding around in a brand new motorized wheelchair thanks to the anonymous donor who did not want any money that was left over.
Commenting on Simon’s gift, Principal Gene Trochinski said, “It was one of those special moments that only happens a couple of times a year.”
Simon says one day he wants to be a sports announcer. “He may be small in stature, but he is a giant of personality and perseverance. He truly is an inspiration to everyone who is blessed to meet him,” said Dennis Hunt, Simon’s English teacher.
