DP Softball took a 4-0 lead into the sixth inning against East River and staved off a furious rally to pick up a 5-4 victory in their season opener. The Panthers got things going quickly in the first inning when Kaley Eastwood’s single to center scored Caitlin Jones and a bases loaded walk by Mackenzie Hansen brought home Eastwood for a 2-0 lead. In the fourth inning, DP loaded the bases again and doubled the lead to 4-0 when Sarah Lang scored on a hit by pitch and Sarah Kollas came in off a walk. East River battled back in the late innings, picking up a run in the sixth and tying the game in the top of the seventh. In the home half of the seventh, Sarah Lang drew a walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Sarah Kollas. A walk by Kalie Hernandez and single up the middle by Rebekah Boggs loaded the bases with two outs. Sophomore Allison Schwartz stepped into the box and with two strikes, Schwartz bounced a shot back to the pitcher, who bobbled it and overthrew first base allowing Sarah Lang to come home with the game-winning run. DP (1-0) will host Jones tomorrow at 6:00 pm.
Over at Shadow Bay Park, Women’s Tennis got their season off on the right foot with a 7-0 sweep over Evans. The Panthers swept lines one through five with 8-0 shutouts in each, led by Sarah Baron, Melanie Wunsch, Tyler Brown, Raphaela Frias and McKenzi Heide. In doubles competition, Tatiana Fernandez and Elizabeth Heckbert took care of business in line one, 8-4, while Diana Guarnizo andLindsay Haddock had no problems in line two, bringing home an 8-2 victory. DP (1-0) will jump back into action this afternoon at South Lake.
Men’s Tennis took to the court for their season opener against Evans and made quick work of the visiting Trojans in a 7-0 victory. Six of seven lines posted 8-0 shutout victories, including all singles’ matches. Peter San Pedro, Cooper Vissers, Ajay Govindaraj, Marcelo Goncalves and Nicholas San Pedro coasted to victories in lines one through five, respectively, while in doubles, Goncalves and Nicholas San Pedro took line one (8-2) with Brett Fielders and Harrison Chau blanking their opponents in line two, 8-0. DP (1-0) will head to South Lake this afternoon.
