Dr. Phillips Men’s Basketball advances to District Championship

RaShawn Powell poured in 34 points and added five rebounds and four assists as Men’s Basketball held off Freedom for a 65-59 victory in the District Tournament Semifinal last night at Cypress Creek. DP (19-7) held a slim lead throughout the game, 14-12 after one and 38-37 after three quarters but Powell’s 16 points in the fourth quarter sealed the win. Tyriefe Beard logged a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds plus four assists and three steals while Jerard Pierre Louis closed out with ten points and five rebounds. RaShawn Powell is now just two points shy of breaking Chris Warren’s single season scoring record as well as a trio of three pointers shy of Warren’s season record for threes. DP will take on Boone tomorrow night at 7:00 in the District Championship at Cypress Creek. While a victory would secure the Panthers’ fifth consecutive title, they have already notched a berth in the Regional Tournament which begins next Thursday. In addition, one more victory would give the program 20 wins for the 20th consecutive season, continuing their state record.

Women’s Tennis traveled to South Lake HS yesterday afternoon and came home with a 7-0 statement victory over the host Eagles to improve to 2-0 on the season. Alizee Michaud made her debut at number one singles and easily dispatched her opponent, 8-0, as did Sarah Baron, Melanie Wunsch, Raphaela Frias and Tyler Brown in lines two through five. In doubles action, McKenzi Heide and Tatiana Fernandez came away with an 8-1 victory while Wunsch and Frias took line two doubles, 8-0. In exhibition doubles matches, Elizabeth Heckbert and Lindsay Haddock (6-2), Diana Guarnizo and Oliwia Fiuk (6-0), Taylor Black and Sarah Winslow (6-0) and Kiana Jiang and Lourdes Goncalves (6-0) completed the DP sweep. The Panthers will head over to Jones for a Metro match Tuesday.

Men’s Tennis had no problems with host South Lake as the Panthers improved to 2-0 with a 7-0 shutout of the Eagles. Peter San Pedro (8-1), Cooper Vissers (8-0), Ajay Govindaraj (8-0), Marcelo Goncalves (8-0) and Nicholas San Pedro (8-0) secured the team victory with a sweep of singles while in doubles, Govindaraj and Nicholas San Pedro took line one, 8-0, with Harrison Chau and Brett Fielder completing the shutout in line two, 8-0. DP will travel to Jones Monday.

On the February National Signing Day a school-record 13 DP student-athletes earned college scholarships. Women’s Basketball was represented by Arianna Cumbie, who signed with Palm Beach Atlantic and Women’s Cross Country saw Bridget Blake sign with Florida State and Amber Johnson sign with Florida. Football had ten signees, including Alton Meeks, who has already enrolled at Iowa State. In addition to Meeks, Victor Clavier (Southwest Baptist University), Eric Harrell (Bowling Green), Marcell Harris (Florida), Cody Krueger (Florida Tech), Jarius McMillan (Coastal Carolina), Matthew Milano(Boston College), Kenderson Obas (Middle Tennessee State), Ian O’Grady (Tusculum College) and Chadwick Williams (Tennessee State) were on hand to sign Football scholarships.
