A former U.S. ambassador who donated $4,800 to Charlie Crist and a Naples woman who also donated are suing the U.S. Senate candidate to get their money back since Crist has dropped his party affiliation.
The plaintiffs, former Ambassador to the Bahamas John Rood, and Linda Morton of Naples, who are seeking class-action status and filed on behalf of all contributors who may wants refunds, the Naples Daily News reported Monday. The pair is represented by Rep. Tom Grady, R-Naples, who resigned as a co-chairman of Crist’s Senate campaign after the party switch and is leaving the Legislature in November.
The suit is filed in circuit court in Collier County.
Morton contributed $500 to the Crist Senate campaign when he was a Republican. Rood donated $4,800, the maximum, the Daily News reported. Rood was appointed to the state university system Board of Governors by Crist.
The governor said in April that he was leaving the Republican Party. He isn’t required by law to return the money. Officials with the Crist campaign didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment from the News Service.
