Allegations of domestic violence against Grammy singer Rihanna by her boyfriend Chris Brown may have put a more public face on the plight, but according to the latest human rights reports by the U.S. State Department, the scourge continues to affect many women across the Caribbean.
In the Bahamas, U.S. officials claim that violence against women continued to be a serious, widespread problem. The police reported that six of 54 killings recorded through September 23, 2008 were related to domestic violence.
