All the evidence in the George Zimmerman second-degree murder trial has now been  turned over the U.S. Department of Justice, the Sanford Police Department said, Monday.

The evidence includes the gun Zimmerman used to fatally shoot Trayvon Martin, an unarmed black teen in February 2012.

Zimmerman, who was charged with second-degree murder, 44 days after the shooting, was acquitted by an almost all white jury on July 13, 2013.

Zimmerman’s acquittal sparked nationwide protests, as many believe that Martin was racially profiled before he was killed by the self-appointed neighborhood watch volunteer.

The Department of Justice, which has an open investigation into the case, is seeking to determine whether or not Martin’s civil rights were violated by Zimmerman.
